A naming ceremony for Russia’s Arctic shuttle tanker of 70,000 dwt ordered by the Sovcomflot group of companies took place on 9 May 2008. This is the second ship in a series of three tankers (“Vasily Dinkov”, “Kapitan Gotsky” and “Timofey Guzhenko”) of enhanced ice class designed for the transportation of oil from the Varandey oil field in the Arctic Region by sea (operated by Naryanmarneftegaz – a Joint Venture of Lukoil and ConocoPhillips). The solemn ceremony held at the Samsung Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (Republic of Korea).
The tanker «Kapitan Gotsky» has the following specifications:
— Length Overall – 257.0m
— Breadth Moulded – 34.0m
— Draft Moulded – 14.0m
— Service Speed (open water) – 16.0 knots.
Unique technical decisions, which allow the ship to operate effectively in the Arctic seas in winter ice conditions, were applied in designing the Arctic shuttle tankers. The ships have an ice-enhanced hull structure, designed in accordance with LU6 (1A Super) ice-class, under the classification of the Russian Register of Shipping. The tankers are equipped with two Azipod propulsion units, with a total power output equivalent to 20mW. The ships all have a dynamic positioning system for use in ice and a helicopter pad. 42. Leader (N) *PROJECT
It is assumed that the construction of the nuclear icebreaker «Leader» will take about 3.5 years. The construction can take place either at «Baltzavod» (if it is modernized) or at «Severnaya Verf» (North shipyard) with completion at «Baltzavod».
According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, by year of 2025 the expected cargo flow in the Arctic in connection with the commissioning of new deposits on the Yamal Peninsula will be about 40 million tons, while the commercial effect of using the Northern Sea Route in exporting hydrocarbons and transit cargo will be achieved only if transport ships with a speed of at least 10-11 knots. It is planned that the limitless thickness of solid ice, overcome by the icebreaker «Leader», will be 4.3 meters at a commercially effective speed of 11-12 knots — 2 meters.
Three operational Russian nuclear ships by year of 2020 will run out of service. They should be replaced by three nuclear ships: the main ship «Arktika», as well as two serial ships «Sibir» and «Ural». All vessels are built at the «Baltic plant» in St. Petersburg on the order of «Rosatomflot».
The new atomic icebreakers of project 10510 «Leader» is conceived as the world’s most powerful nuclear icebreakers, their capacity is 120 MW. The main tasks of the new nuclear-powered vessels should be to ensure year-round navigation along the Northern Sea Route and conduct expeditions to the Arctic. Guiding large-tonnage vessels is expected due to the large width of these icebreakers.
Earlier it was reported that three Arctic icebreakers would be needed to develop the Arctic.
Icebreaker 10510 «Leader» (LK-110Ya, LK-120Ya) is a promising type of Russian nuclear icebreakers. The abbreviation of the name stands for «an icebreaker, with a capacity of 120 MW (on a shaft), with a nuclear power unit». «Leader» can easily overcome Arctic ice with a thickness of more than 4 m and build a navigable canal for guiding ships with a width of 50 m. «Leader» will be able to pass through two-meter ice at a speed of 14 knots. Conventional icebreakers of the LK-60 series with the same ice thickness move no faster than two knots and are able to break the «road» no wider than 36 m. The construction of the building is estimated at 80 billion rubles.
Currently, the «Leader» exists in the form of a layout.
It is reported that the nuclear icebreaker «Leader» of project 10510, as well as all subsequent icebreakers will be built of innovative materials. special metals are being developed that will be able not only to self-diagnose in case of damage and corrosion, but also to be transformed for self-healing purposes.
In the hull of the future ship — for the first time in history — there will not be identical frames (the so-called transverse ribs of the structure forming the outlines of the hull). This will provide the icebreaker with unprecedented patency in the ice compared to its «classmates». Thanks to the new technical solutions, the «Leader» will be able to overcome Arctic ice with a thickness of more than 4 m, laying a navigable canal with a width of 50 m at a speed of up to 10 knots (about 19 km/h) / (source).
